Brief History of Tooting
From the time of pre-Saxon the area is found to have been settled. The origin of the name is disputed. Few believe the name has been derived from Tota, the local Anglo-Saxon chieftain. It could also mean verb to word tout in Old English. The Romans had built a road in the area which was named by the English as Stane Street. The road extended from London to Chichester and passed through Tooting. In Domesday Book the area has been named as Totinges.
