The name of the district has been derived from a wood on Colliers Wood High Street’s east, approximately at the present Marlborough, Warren and Birdhurst Roads. Evidence show the wood remained their until 1870 when for the development purpose it was cleared. The district is home to 12th Century Merton Priory ruin.

It was also known as Brown & Root Tower and The Vortex. The first time when the tower was built, an error in construction was found so it was demolished to rebuild it.
