From the time of pre-Saxon the area is found to have been settled. The origin of the name is disputed. Few believe the name has been derived from Tota, the local Anglo-Saxon chieftain. The road extended from London to Chichester and passed through Tooting. In Domesday Book the area has been named as Totinges.
